Welcome to 2018 everyone! It is truly an honor to serve as your 2018 HRACRE President and I am extremely excited to dive into the challenging work that lies ahead of us. As we begin the new year, I can’t help but think back to some of the New Year’s uncertainty that we’ve all pondered as the past handful of years have gotten under way. I’m sure you all remember the annual economic forecasts that predicted flat or only marginal improvements for the current and subsequent years, the fears that our government would implode following the Presidential election in 2017 and not knowing where our friends and colleagues were working from week to week as they sought shelter with other companies or had their jobs eliminated. That’s been a tough place to be for all of us that are passionate about what we do every day given the time and effort we’ve put into learning and practicing our crafts and tirelessly building our businesses.
But wait, is it just me or, do things seem different now? Actually, I’ll restate that – things ARE different now. I honestly don’t remember the last conversation I had with someone that wasn’t busier than ever and struggling to find more help. I drive down the streets of Virginia Beach, where I was born and raised, and am amazed at the amount of new construction going on. I don’t know about you, but even working nights and weekends is a little less painful since that time is not entirely spent chasing work, but actually DOING it. Although there are no guarantees in this business (or life for that matter), this is the strongest start to a new year that I can recall in the past decade or so, so let’s embrace it and get going!
I am humbled to have had the opportunity to be a part of HRACRE for so many years and work side by side with many of the brightest, most influential people in our industry. The professional and personal relationships I have formed are life-long and I look forward to making new ones in 2018. I also look forward to a year packed with high quality HRACRE networking events, educational opportunities and meaningful, collaborative influence on legislative items such as storm water regulations, transportation and economic development funding. With our Executive Director, Jennifer Montgomery, being a seasoned lobbyist, 2018 represents our best opportunity to have a substantial impact in Richmond by advocating for and against things that affect what we do every day. Given the strength of our membership and generosity of our volunteers, I have no doubt we will accomplish many great things in 2018. I want to thank each and every one of you for the contributions and sacrifices you make that keep HRACRE strong and getting stronger and I wish you all a safe, happy and prosperous new year!
