July 17, 2020- I never really imagined that by July we’d still be dealing with Covid-19, or that we would experience the level of civil unrest that we’ve seen recently, or that politics could have become even more negative over the course of this year. Sometimes it feels as if there are no bright spots, just anger and frustration on all sides.
And then I direct my attention to HRACRE. During this same period of time we have represented ourselves professionally and successfully in Richmond. We may not have prevailed in every discussion, but we were part of the conversations thanks to our Legislative Committee. The Programs Committee quickly adapted to the new now and has presented timely virtual presentations to keep us abreast of happenings in our area. Watch for details on the next one being scheduled for September. The Intern Committee proceeded with the Internship Program, also virtually. There will be new members of our profession who will have gained from being a part of that unique experience. We thank The REACH Foundation for again providing scholarship funds for participants. The Membership Committee created the Executive Mentorship Program for students and young professionals just starting out in their careers. We are poised to launch a Military Externship to engage personnel transitioning out of military careers into a new one in CRE. We recently partnered with Inside Business to broaden our reach across Hampton Roads (or “Coastal Virginia”, “Tidewater”, “Southeast Virginia”, or “The 757”).
We’ve had to cancel a few events, and postpone others, but the Golf Tournament will go on October 1. Everyone should be about ready for some socially distant, outdoor fun and networking by then. The Design Awards will also go on as scheduled in November. Hurry – the deadline for submissions is quickly approaching. Our fingers are crossed that we’ll be able to pull off the popular Beach Bash – it might look different, and might not be at the beach, but I’m still looking forward to it. We’ll be making decisions on other programs and events as we watch closely the ebb and flow of this virus.
Belonging to HRACRE gives me a sense of community that has been missing from other parts of my life lately. Being involved in committees gives me a sense of purpose, and satisfaction that we have been able to accomplish so much. So take heart; this too shall pass, better days are around the corner . . . . and get involved with your Association. There are positive things going on here.
